DIY Suncatchers with Air-Dry Clay

DIY Suncatchers with Air-Dry Clay

March is National Craft Month, making it the perfect time to get creative with fun and easy projects! This DIY suncatcher craft is a great way to add a colourful touch to your windows using air-dry clay, acetate, and decorative paper. Inspired by the Entertain Idea blog, we’ve put our own twist on this simple yet stunning craft.

What You’ll Need:

Step-by-Step Guide:

Step 1: Prepare Your Shapes

Choose two different-sized shapes for your suncatcher design—for example, a large and a small star. Trace the smaller shape onto an acetate sheet using a permanent marker. Make sure to trace slightly larger than the smaller shape to ensure there’s some overlap with your air-dry clay frame.

Step 2: Roll and Cut the Magiclay

Knead the Paper Magiclay to make it soft and pliable, then roll it out to about ½ cm thickness. Use the larger cookie cutter to cut out your shape, and then use the smaller cutter to remove the centre, creating a hollow frame.

Step 3: Create the Collage

While the Magiclay dries (approximately 1 hour), work on the acetate. Brush a thin layer of Mont Marte Deco Pudge Gloss onto the acetate and start layering pieces of Zart Handmade Collage Shapes or tissue paper. Apply another coat of Deco Pudge over the top to seal it in place. Let it dry.

Step 4: Add the Hanging Hole

Once the Magiclay is dry, use a needle to carefully poke a small hole at the top of each shape. This will be used for threading the twine later.

Step 5: Attach the Acetate to the Magiclay

Apply Deco Pudge to the Magiclay frame, then carefully place the acetate-covered collage onto it. Press gently to secure it. Allow it to dry for about 30 minutes.

Step 6: Seal the Suncatcher

Once the acetate is attached, give the entire piece one final coat of Deco Pudge to seal everything together. This adds durability and a glossy finish.

Step 7: Thread and Hang

Once everything is completely dry, thread Zart Bakers Twine through the holes of each shape, creating a stunning hanging suncatcher display. Space them evenly and tie knots to keep them secure.

Enjoy Your Handmade Suncatchers!

Now you have a beautiful set of DIY suncatchers ready to brighten up your windows. This is a fantastic craft for all ages, combining air-dry clay sculpting with vibrant paper collage. Try experimenting with different shapes, colours, and patterns to make your suncatchers truly unique.

Happy creating!
