The 2025 Milburn Art Prize: A Celebration of Landscape and Imagination

The 2025 Milburn Art Prize is now open for entries, inviting artists from across Australia to explore the theme ‘Landscape as a space of creative discovery’.

Hosted by the Brisbane Institute of Art (BIA), this prize continues to honour the legacy of the late Paul Milburn – a beloved and respected tutor at BIA from 1989 until his passing in 2011.

Reflecting BIA’s evolving creative direction, the Milburn Art Prize encourages both emerging and established artists to push the boundaries of landscape art. It’s an opportunity to surprise, challenge and inspire through personal interpretations of landscape – not just as a physical space, but as a vessel for imaginative exploration.

Eligible media: painting, drawing, printmaking, mixed media and photography.

The Prize is about more than recognition – it’s about conversation. By encouraging artistic exploration of landscape, BIA hopes to spark deeper connections between artists, audiences and the arts industry.

"I see pictorial space as an inner landscape for the mind’s eye to roam; so it is not surprising if my paintings evoke the feeling of landscape... While painting, I am issuing an open invitation for these illusions – or allusions – to enter. My conscious mind can be occupied with the making, and the unconscious can come up with its own surprises."
– John Peart
